Intimate themes, masterly drawings and an exuberant color palette characterize the 20 pieces in this 12-year retrospective exhibit of work by Fidencio Durán, one of Austin’s most honored artists.

The works, begun at a time of personal loss and national tragedy, emerge as celebrations of life, nature and community. Tree of Life began with drawings of living plants, Durán’s affirmative response to his mother’s sudden illness and the 9/11 attacks.  From these drawings grew many of the figurative paintings on exhibit, like Slingshots (2005) and Child of the Land (2007).

In Durán’s thematic universe, birds, flora and traditional still-life motifs become metaphors for the universal human need for shelter and community.  Both themes are embodied in, and inspired by, families.  The Birdhouse series, for example, grew out of Durán’s memories of his father’s ability to make useful objects from found materials and from his mother’s green thumb and love of birds.  Familiar species like mockingbirds, cardinals, sparrows and wrens embody these themes in Las Mañanitas (2011).  Rarer species, such as painted buntings and trogons, inhabit the emotional landscapes of Huichol Canyon (2012) and Ladies’ Night Out (2013).
